Environmental Hosts of the Maipo River Wetland

This is a volunteer program for seniors in the province of San Antonio, which seeks to preserve and highlight the history of the mouth of the Maipo River from its oldest inhabitants.

Since 2021, the program has operated continuously, turning its participants into true protagonists, defenders, and icons of the community in this socio-ecosystem.

Currently, the program has more than 20 active participants, who contribute to environmental education programs, bird watching, ecological restoration, and community connection, highlighting the cultural and natural heritage of the Nature Sanctuary.

Cleanups and community participation

One of the daily factors that most damages the ecosystem of the Maipo River Wetland Nature Sanctuary is the accumulation of garbage. This reaches the beach, the grasslands, and the banks of the estuary, dragged by the tides, the floods of the Maipo River, or directly by human action.

Therefore, frequent clean-up days are essential for the conservation of the wetland, and the active participation of the community is key to making these actions sustainable over time.

The work with the community also includes the restoration of degraded areas, through the planting of native species and the elimination of invasive plants. Caring for the wetland is a shared responsibility and an opportunity to reconnect with nature.

Summer and winter activities

During the summer and winter vacation seasons, we organize guided tours and activities for the community together with the Municipality of Santo Domingo. These instances seek to bring visitors and locals closer to the Sanctuary, to increase their appreciation and care.
